Fat Lava is the term used for a specific style of ceramics produced in West Germany during the 1960’s and 1970’s.
After establishing themselves at the forefront of ceramic design in the 1950’s West German manufacturers underwent an iconic period of avante-garde design styles throughout the style conscious 60’s and 70’s pushing all the boundaries in terms of shape, colour and glazes to their limits.
Some of the major producers include Roth, Scheurich, Bay, Ruscha and Jasba amongst others.
The pieces are generally auctioned within the ceramics section of 20th Century Design Sales and are currently seeing a dramatic rise in both interest and prices realised from collectors.
