Discovered amongst the contents of a local routine house clearance, a comprehensive and astonishing collection of the signatures of early Hollywood and British film stars from the golden years of the 1920’s and 30’s, is now being offered for auction. The collection comprising thousands of rare autographs are actually the lifetime’s work of one remarkable lady, Florence Clark, or Florrie who had a zest for the movies from a young age and set out to obtain actual signatures of her favorite stars of stage and screen. Florrie’s fantastic collection which is truly an important and intriguing insight into the very early days of cinema, will be auctioned as part of Richard Winterton’s Fine & Decorative Art Sale, which is scheduled to be held at the Lichfield Auction Centre on November 1st.
Notably, documentation in the collection reveals that Florrie use to write to the studios in Hollywood and UK requesting the autographs which were duly sent back to her, sometimes with a letter and a good luck note.
The collection includes the autographs of some well-known stars such as George Formby, John Gielgud, Norman Wisdom, Douglas Fairbanks, Ivor Novello, and legends like Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon. Also, some of the other important signatures to mention include those of the famous Aviators Amy Johnson and her husband Jim Mollinson.
